Volyn - presented by Yaoroslav Smyrnov

This session will focus on the the ethnography, costuming, and lexicon of the ethnographic region of Volyn in Ukraine. 

Our Presenter

Yaroslav Smyrvov

Yaroslav Smyrnov was born on August 8, 1990, in Lutsk, Volyn oblast, Ukraine, to a family of choreographers, artists of the Ukrainian Song & Dance Company «Volyn».

At the age of 5, he began studying at one of the largest children's collectives in Ukraine – the «Folk Artistic Group» of the folk dance ensemble “Radist” of the Lutsk Student Youth Palace. During his studies in the group he was a participant and winner of many national and international festivals and competitions.

In 2007, after receiving his secondary education at Lutsk Gymnasium No.4, he entered the Department of Choreography at the Institute of Arts of Volyn National University named after Lesya Ukrainka. He graduated in 2012 and received a diploma with honors in qualification: a teacher, choreographer, and an actor.

In 2007, being a student of the university, he began his professional career as a ballet artist in the Ukrainian Song & Dance Company «Volyn». During his tenure as a dancer of ensemble, many concerts and tours have taken place both in Ukraine and abroad: Poland, France, Belgium, Finland, Lithuania and others.

In 2008, he was hired to work at the Palace of Student Youth in Lutsk as the choreography teacher of the group in folk dance ensemble “Radist”. In the dance group Yaroslav taught the basics of classical dance, folk-choreography to students, created new dance productions. Under the leadership of Yaroslav Smyrnov, the dance groups of the ensemble repeatedly won national and international festivals and competitions. The Grand Prix at the 5th All-Ukrainian Pavlo Virsky National Choreography Competition in 2018 was the most important award. Also in 2008 he was invited to the position of choreographer in the children’s and youth ensemble of the song and dance “Volynski soloveiky”, which operates at the Tadeusz Kosciuszko Polish Culture Society.

Continuing his choreographic education he studied at 4-year choreographic studios at the University in Rzeszow, Poland from 2014 to 2018. He studied the features of Polish folk choreography and Polish art in general during his years in the studio and received a university diploma.

Currently, Yaroslav works as a ballet artist, soloist of the Ukrainian Song & Dance Company «Volyn» of the Volyn Regional Philharmonic, he is a teacher of the dance group of the Folk Dance Ensemble “Radist” of the Student Youth Palace in Lutsk, and a choreographer in the children’s and youth ensemble of the song and dance “Volynski soloveiky”.
